Since a few years ago, considering the difficulties of stargazing from a severe polluted area like Rome,I've been interested in solar observations, not only limited to solar sunspots ,but also in solar spectrography. My first solar spectroscope was the one reported in the following project. The only limitation I obliged myself to follow was the overall cost, that ought to be not much more than $ 200.I used a diffraction grating that a friend of mine kindly gave to me, but ruled diffraction gratings  of 600/ 1200 grooves p. mm. are in stock c/o Edmund Industrial Optics for nothing more than $ 70/100.The grating must rotate on its own axis to make possible to explore the whole spectra. The model of spectroscope was of not-autocollimatig type, to avoid internal reflections I knew to be usual in the autocollimating spectroscopes.I gave particular attention to choose the collimating lens (the one focused on the slit) but it's useful a binocular objective lens, that's is easy to find for a few dollars.A lens like that may also be used as observation lens.I used as collimating lens a 50/ 300 lens I owned and as observation lens a 60/ 415 Japanese refractor, but every kind of optics may practically be used, with the limitation that the  lens coating must have a wide band pass. The slit, that may consist of two razor blades mounted at a distance of not more than 3/10 mm, is put at the entrance of light. One can notice that such a wide slit opening is related to the collimating lens F number and the order of spectra being examined .I usually explore the order two, considerable wider but less bright than the one of the first. In any case the slit opening must be set in function of optics and order, and be determined by attempts.Hereunder is the first project of my solar spectroscope:

.Be careful: never attempt to aim a spectroscope or any  spectra observing device to the sun without a slit with a very small aperture: otherwise severe injury to your eyes may result !

Once realized this simple project, my attention was directed toward  new and more interesting ones, the last of all was the cylinder lens (or slitless) spectroscope reported in the "Instruments for spectroscopy" section in its different models, I successfully used to record sun spectra.I tried to understand how such a spectroscope could give excellent images of solar spectra, far superior,in my opinion, to those of a common amateur slit spectroscope.I'm not a tecnician, so I gave myself answers that I sincerely  don't know how right they are from the scientific point of vue.

1- The realization of a stenopeic hole is far more  simple then that of a well  optically worked slit

2- The package of photons entering the hole is "smoothned" by the telescope optics forming a perfect  point of light , transformed in a line by the cylinder lens that works as  collimating lens of spectroscope.

3- Such a line is optically better than the slit image commonly sent by a collimator to the grating.

La seguente immagine a bassa risoluzione dello spettro solare può soltanto rendere una lontana idea di come appare l'immagine dello spettro stesso all'oculare dello spettroscopio a lente cilindrica.

The following low resolution image can only give a modest example of the appearance of solar spectra at the ocular of the cylinder lens spectroscope

                                                                                 USING SLIT SPECTROSCOPES

To obtain by a simple slit spectroscope a better resolution in order to explore  zones of the solar disk of particular interest, it's necessary to project onto the slit of the spectroscope a focused cone of light coming from a telescope's objective. With the same grating's dimensions and type and spectroscope's optics, the longer the telescope focal lenght, the better the system resolution. The problem is that long FL scopes are physically long too. in the case of refractors, thing to be avoided when possible. So, I worked to two projects, to get the smallest instruments I could: the first with a 30 mm x 600 l/mm grating and three Konus small commercial scopes, and a second with a concave 40 x 50 mm grating and only one optics, a 60/350 refractor. Both projects give enough resolution (0,7/08 A/pixel) for a not scientific use.

2° Progetto: "COGOS" acronimo di "COncave Grating Opticsless Spectroscope" nel quale sono stati usati i seguenti elementi;

2nd project; "COGOS" for COncave GRating Opticsless Spectroscope, in which I used the following components:

a concave reflection grating, coming from a monocromator, presumibly 600 l/mm (but I'm not sure) 40 x 50 mm in dimension, and a slit. The grating is obtained from a concave rectangular mirror  40 x 50 mm, 120 mm of focal lenght ,and does not need of other optics , for it act both as collimator and camera or eyepiece objective , as it acts both as collimator and as camera or eyepiece optics. It was placed into a square box 80x 80 mm threaded 42x1 mm on two faces. The grating's motion was assured with the usual spring system, while the adjustable slit, also selfmade, is situated at the focus of the grating.Obviously such a spectroscope, if used "stand alone" is to be considered a low resolution one for the short focal lenght of the grating. One must say, furthermore, that the focusing range from a spectral band to another (say , from green to red) needs a wide focuser excursion, for the grating, rotating on its axe,  focuses on a circle, called "Rowlands circle" for that I applied at the box a long excursion rack and pinion focuser. To increase resolution, the instrument can be applied at the prime focus of a refractor,A first experiment like this was done with a small 60/350 chinese refractor, bought at surplus market for only 20 €, surely not of high optical quality, but light enough to be applied  to the spectroscope, instead the contrary.Such a setup reached the noticeable resolution of 0.235 A/Pixel in the 2nd order. The negative point of this realization is the grating motion system, that  doesn't appear anymore sufficient for the resolution level. The positive point is that the instrument  is a high resolution, low dimensions and absolutely portable spectroscope, almost easy to assemble.

Last june, 2, 2005 I experimented a serie of further improvements to COGOS: improvements absolutely simple, but capable to make me double the resolution level previously reached, till 0.08 A/pixel that ,I believe, it's the maximum resolution that one can reach without  a total change of the project's  philosophy : a portable, stand alone or applied to a small telescope, medium-high resolution solar spectroscope. This time I used a  very small and light chinese refractor (50/350) a bit more heavy than a finder  focused onto the slit. The real news was the use of a 2X Kenko teleconverter inserted just before the adjustable slit , and a 2x bCelestron barlow lens.Remember that the concave grating needs no optics, so the two teleconverters   simply amplifie the convergent light beam (ca. 120 mm focus) of the grating. This setup, showed below, weights only 1,8 Kg (the weight of a good CCD camera) and is only 56 cm long: not bad for such a resolution level.

In the following images are shown both the Mg triplet at new resolution (0,08 A/pix)  and a comparison with the previous, lower (0,23 A/Pix),The higher resolution, that make visible  visually  0,3/0,5 A is the initial point to do interesting spectral observations on the sun, such as the strenghtening and widening of  some sensitive lines, and their splitting in consequence of strong magnetic fields of active regions (cd. Zeeman effect). The higher resolution makes, on the other side, much more difficult the exact calibration of spectrum and lines identification. Those of following images were obtained by the Moore's spectral catalogue.I intend, anyway, to try to reach higher resolution (about 0.02 A), but the job is not simple, for the short FL of the grating and the (too much) simple grating motion system.

The Sodium doublet, observed at a 0,088 A/pixel, shows interesting features, such as the strenghtening of the line at 5889,97 A due to the contribute of Atm H20, and permits to define in about 0,3 A the "core" of the second line at 5895,94  A.Evident, among the two , the nickel line and others (about 7) of Atm H2O.

As my first model of cylinder lens spectroscope this new instrument too can be  easily used for solar spectra observations. It is, in this case, necessary to use all possible devices to assure the complete safety of observations. keep in mind that observing the sun without care can be very hazardous for your eyes ,causing even blindness. It's necessary then to build a black cardboard mask  with a stenopeic hole whose diameter is to be chosen in function of the focal lenght of telescope, according to the principles of stenopeic photography (Fig 8d). The  hole must be put off axis, in the case of central obstruction scopes, being about 0.7 mm in the case of a Schmidt Cassegrain telescope reduced at 670 mm FL.Such an aperture is not a large one, but  the centering of the scope and the spectroscope watching trough the eyepiece is to be done using a ND filter to better protect the eyes. The results on the sun of the spectroscope are slightly less in quality to that of my first instrument, possibly due to the use of the cubic beamsplitter , whose  thickness produces some reflections in the case of strong light and that one of the element of the spectroscope is slightly off axis.In any case, the chance  observe the object whose spectrum  is  to be registered,  to  focus  on it , and , further, to can possibly guide on it, must be paid in some way.In the Fig 9b is shown an example of a solar spectrum in orange region (Sodium doublet) shot by a Philips Vesta webcam, stacking of 100 frames from an AVI film combined by Registax 3 free software.
